2008 Nebraska Walk Now for Autism More than Doubles Attendance

The 2nd annual Nebraska Walk Now for Autism took place at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, May 24. The Walk attracted 1,500 participants, a 104% increase in participation over 2007, and raised more than $75,000. Unique to the Nebraska event, walkers brought large photos of the people who inspired them to walk, which were prominently displayed around the walk site and along the route.

Prior to the Walk, State Senator Tony Fulton (D) presented opening remarks and welcomed the walkers and local high school student Veronica Benton performed the National Anthem.

Players from the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers football and basketball teams signed autographs, as did members of the Lincoln Stars hockey team. Walkers enjoyed a demonstration by Okinawa Karate and the chance to win a raffle emceed by local radio personalities Rod Fowler and Lauren Silverman of Froggy 98. Families also visited the resource fair, which featured a lineup of 16 organizations and companies, including Special Olympics, Autism Center of Nebraska, and Behaven Community Services.

Special thanks to silver sponsors Subway, Sam's, and Lincoln Benefit Life. Bronze sponsors included Bockman, Children's Hospital, Lunza, McDonalds, Runza International, Sandhill Publishing and Whitz Company. Cornerstone Bank and Handprints and Footprints served as Community Investors. Additional thanks to the nearly 20 companies who donated products and services, including food, refreshments and advertising.

Thanks to Walk Chairs Karina Reinke, Cathy Martinez and Holly Bailey for making this walk so successful.
