When a user of mine uploads an image, it will replace it with a style image such as "mini_statistics.gif"
Is this a chmod problem?

no chmoding is for permission to enter to read write directories and files
i its not because of chmoding
whats is exactly the problem

test check putting the images directory chmoded to 777 and see if you still face the trouble
maybe because the images not getting uploaded to the server you are getting a default image
