Defending Freedom (About Those 750 New Laws in California ...)
      

According to a report in my newspaper, more than 750 new laws went into effect in California on January 1. On the plus side:

• Brewers are now permitted to give away promotional items up to a value of $3.

• Marriage-license forms now allow for the possibility that a man may wish to take his wife's name.

• Roadside fruit stands may now sell homemade jam.

On the other hand:

• It is now illegal to send text messages while driving, though it is still legal to eat a fish taco while driving ...
