The statins' reputation has been built on their ability to effectively lower cholesterol levels, saving millions of lives in the process, as well as on their relatively benign cast of side effects.

In many ways, statins are almost as magical as aspirin, because similar to aspirin, they are generally safe and have multiple disease-fighting qualities.
