Robinson Crusoe, the hero of Daniel Defoe's novel of the same name, was based on a Scottish sailor whose career was decidedly more checkered.

That sailor made a solitary home for five years on an island that has many attractions today---but far fewer 300 years ago, when Alexander Selkirk was finally rescued from his marooning.
