France’s defence of the World Cup ended in dismal failure today after they became the first reigning champions since Brazil in 1966 to bow out of the tournament.
The 1998 champions were beaten 2-0 by Denmark, who qualify from Group A along with shock troops Senegal after they drew 3-3 with Uruguay.
The situation has therefore become much clearer for England, who now know they will face the African side - who threw away a three-goal lead today - if they beat Nigeria tomorrow and finish top of Group F.
England are currently behind Sweden in Group F on goal difference,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, but they know that if they top their group tomorrow then they will take on Senegal in Oita on Sunday while second place would see them face Denmark in Niigata on Saturday.
Eriksson’s men are now aware of what lies ahead, but here PA Sport analyses the possible scenarios that await them tomorrow:

IF ENGLAND WIN AGAINST NIGERIA:
* They will finish first or second.
* They will finish first if: Argentina win OR draw OR Sweden win and England win by a goal more, to overcome Sweden’s goal difference, OR if England triumph by a high-scoring one-goal margin, to better Sweden’s goals scored.
* They will finish second if: Sweden win and England do not win by a goal more,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, to overcome Sweden’s goal difference OR England do not triumph by a high-scoring one-goal margin, to better Sweden’s goals scored.
IF ENGLAND DRAW:
* They will finish first or second.
* They will finish first if: Sweden draw and England’s scoreline is two goals higher than Sweden’s - for example, 2-2 compared to 0-0 - to better Sweden’s goals scored.
* They will finish second if: Argentina win OR Sweden win OR draw in a scoreline at least matching England’s goals - for example, both matches ending 1-1 - meaning Sweden’s goals scored would remain higher than England’s.
IF ENGLAND LOSE:
* They will finish second or third.
* They will finish second if: Sweden win OR Argentina win by more goals than Nigeria, giving England a better goal difference or goals scored than Sweden OR Argentina draw 1-1 and England lose by only one goal - with England being ahead as a result of their 1-0 win over Argentina.
* They will finish third if: Argentina win and Nigeria win by a goal more than the South Americans, leaving England with worse goal difference or goals scored than Sweden,You are not allowed to view links. NOTE:
* The scenarios above avoid the need for lots to decide positions.
* If England and Sweden finish on identical points and goals scored, their positions will be decided by drawing lots. This is because goals scored and goal difference just between the two teams are also equal, following Sunday’s 1-1 opening game draw.
* If England and Argentina finish on identical points and goals scored, England will be ahead on goals scored and goal difference as a result of Friday’s 1-0 win.
