"They understand we can only search where we have got information," Sgt Gardiner said.
A search for a German backpacker missing for 11 days in Western Australia's southwest has been called off.
Senior Sergeant Russell Gardiner said Mr Bielenberg's parents had been understanding of the decision to call the search off.
Mr Bielenberg urged his son in German to make contact with police if he was able to.
Security footage filmed at the hostel on the night Mr Bielenberg went missing shows him leaving the rear of the hostel about 2.20am (WST) and returning to find the door to his room locked.
At the time he disappeared he was wearing a brown hooded jumper, a dark brown peak cap, black boxer shorts and black socks.
His parents Wilhelm and Ursula Bielenberg travelled from the town of Alfeld in Lower Saxony to make a public plea for information on their son's whereabouts on Friday.
He had been in Bunbury since June and had a return flight to Germany booked on August 13,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, with his visa due to expire.
He is described as 190cm tall, of medium/muscular build, with short light brown hair and brown eyes.
Aerial, land and sea searches have failed to find any trace of the 20-year-old, who does not have his passport and has not accessed his bank account.
