Plant pine trees in October or November in Colorado, while the trees are dormant and before the ground freezes. Purchase several varieties of pine for variation in texture, height, shape and color. Buy saplings that are less than 5 years old and less than 5 feet tall.
Pour half a bucket of water in each hole. If it does not drain quickly, amend the soil with equal parts peat and organic garden soil to improve drainage. Plant each pine, backfilling with dirt and pressing it firmly against root balls to eliminate air spaces around the roots. Finish each planting with a bucket of water.
Choose an area on your property that needs a "living screen." It can be between you and a neighbor's property or fronting your street. It can be along your driveway, or on the northwest side of your house. Whatever you choose, make sure this area gets full sun, and if you're asking the pines to double as a windbreak, be sure to plant them where they can block the prevailing wind.
Continue watering every other day until the ground freezes to help encourage new growth in the roots before winter sets in. Fertilize in spring with evergreen spikes,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, following package directions for the size and age of the pine.
