An obvious point to make is that while the previous film was black and white, Dawn of the Dead is live and in living (or un-living) color You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, which means red blood and redder gore. Tom Savini doubles as an actor in the third act as well as the primary makeup man responsible for the splatter-fest you'll see in this movie. It was appalling to audiences when it first came out, and to this day, it's still pretty tough to watch. Compare that to CG effects that are unconvincing and obviously not real; the blood and visual effects in this movie is an example that it's more effective (and gross) when there's actually something in front of the camera. We're looking at you, George Lucas.
A few weeks after the events of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead is bigger and badder in size and scope. The infection is no longer just enough to overrun a house, but now a country side. Society has just begun to crumble, and survivors are far and few. Getting past the fact that it's about zombies, the subtle horror lies in the fact that the movie feels completely real, like seeing into the future. Everything's believable, but luckily the movie is JUST silly enough to not drown itself in dark and brooding-ness (that's saved for Day of the Dead).

Just as in its predecessor, Dawn of the Dead has an underlying message or theme to it within its context. With the zombies wandering aimlessly between the shopping outlets, you might notice that there's little difference between the undead on screen or just a typical shopper. Romero's message of American becoming a land of mindless consumers is satirical, by showing that Americans, even after death, will congregate at the shopping mall. Or maybe it's more that America will be ravaged and left in ruins if our lust for material goods isn't subdued. Class warfare is another possibility, and if that's the case, the survivors are meant to represent the rich, who want nothing more than to shut themselves in with their beloved material goods and keep the poor out in the wastelands to perish with their primal, basic instincts.
A lot of the fun in the movie is simply due to the home that the survivors make for themselves: a shopping mall. Think about it: if you were turned loose in a shopping mall to be used as a playground and you didn't have to pay for anything you take, break or eat, you'd be rating about a 9.0 on the Fun-O-Meter. Watching the characters goofing around and laughing, brings some much-needed levity to the heavy situation they're in, and it works for us as an audience as well. As a more recent zombie film points out, "Enjoy the little things".
is 5 Pies-to-the-Face out of 5.
After a zombie apocalypse brings humanity to its knees, a small group of random survivors band together in an abandoned mall complex. There, they have to learn with survival against zombies as well as other outside intruders, all while avoiding the big question on everyone's mind: what if rescue never comes?
The subtle nature of the message allows multiple interpretations, but however you look at it, Dawn of the Dead is and always will be You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, one of the pivotal horror films in history.
