Register or Login<p>In 1991, Mazda became the first, and to date, the only Japanese automaker to score an overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s most famous endurance race. The winning car, the Mazda 787B, featured a stout and boisterous 700-horsepower R26B four-rotor rotary powerplant. Driven by Johnny Herbert, Volker Widler and Bertrand Gachot, the #55 Mazda 787B started 19th on the grid and its balance of speed, handling and reliability won the day. The 787B beat out the best from Jaguar and Mercedes Benz, completing 362 laps and covering 4932.2 kms or 3,064 miles. Mazda is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the victory by reviving the car and running exhibition laps at Circuit de la Sarthe.</p>
