Sending E-mail on Your Smartphone or Pocket PC Phone
by Suzanne Ross

Applies to: Windows Mobile powered Smartphone and Pocket PC Phone Edition
I'm not a techie. I think technology should help me. If it looks cool, that's a bonus, but who needs pretty? I need things to work.

I've got two new devices, a Smartphone and a Pocket PC. I'm learning how to use them, and I'll share what I've learned with you. The first thing I wanted to do was check my e-mailâ€"both my MSN Hotmail and my work e-mail. I've started a new habit: I check my work e-mail every morning at breakfast on my Smartphone. It helps me ease into the work day. I also check the weather report and the traffic.

This week, I'm going to tell you about how to get e-mail on your Smartphone or Pocket PC Phone Edition. Next week, I'll cover devices that aren't connected through a mobile operator (the company that sends you your phone bill). Plus I'll cover the world of POP3 and IMAP.

Tip: If you live in the United States, read Configure your e-mail to learn how to wirelessly access your e-mail.

Business e-mail

First, find out what type of corporate e-mail your company has. If you aren't sure, ask your IT department.

If your company uses Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 or Microsoft Exchange Server with Mobile Information Server (MIS):

Ask the IT department for the correct server name, user name, and domain name to enter on your device.

Set up e-mail on a Smartphone running Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition

    *
If the device is connected to your desktop computer, disconnect it.
    *
On the Smartphone home screen, select Start.
    *
      Select ActiveSync.
    *
Select Menu, and then select Options.
    *
Select Server Settings, and then select Connection.
    *
Enter the server name, user name, domain name, e-mail address, and password.
    *
      Select Done.

Set up e-mail on a Smartphone running Windows Mobile 2002

    *
If the device is connected to your desktop computer, disconnect it.
    *
On the Smartphone Home screen, select Programs.
    *
      Select ActiveSync.
    *
Select Menu, and then select Options.
    *
      Select Connections.
    *
Enter the server name, user name, domain name, e-mail address, and password.
    *
      Select Done.

Set up e-mail on a Pocket PC Phone Edition

    *
In ActiveSync on the device, tap Tools > Options > Server tab.
    *
Select the types of information, such as Calendar, Contacts, or Inbox, that you want to synchronize with the server.
    *
To change the synchronization settings, such as the amount synchronized, select the type of information and tap Settings.
    *
Under Sync with this server, enter the name of your Microsoft Exchange server.
    *
      Tap Options.
    *
On the Connections tab, enter your user name, password, and domain name.

If your company doesn't use Exchange 2003 Server:

Find out if your company's IT department supports mobile access to e-mail. If so, find out if the company uses one of the following solution providers:

    *
      Extended Systems
    *
      Good
    *
      Intellisync
    *
      JPMobile
    *
      Seven
    *
      Smartner
    *
      Visto

If your company is using one of these solutions, ask your IT department how you can connect to it from your mobile device.

MSN Hotmail

To read your MSN or Hotmail e-mail, open Internet Explorer from your start menu. You can select Favorites to navigate quickly to MSN Mobile, or select Menu, then Address Bar and type in You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login. On the MSN Mobile page, select MSN Hotmail. Enter your complete e-mail address and password to access your mail.

I did find that entering my password, which has an underline in it, was a little tricky. On the Audiovox 5600 you can press the *T9 key and select Symbols to enter text that doesn't appear on the keypad. You can also press and hold the # to quickly access Symbols.
