hello
i have 2 computer desktop and a laptop
the laptop cd rom is damages its not reading cds and i messed the partitions on it using my partition magic so i can't enter any window on the laptop
please give me a way which i can install a new window on my laptop using the shared cd rom on the Local network from the desktop computer using a bootable floppy disk on the laptop

The only bootable thing is a floppy disk

can you take the disk out of the laptop and put it into a disk caddy?

You need a 2.5 to 3.5 IDE adaptor cable and then if you follow my suggestion you will be up and running in no time. I beleive this is the fastest way.

The alternative is to boot from a floppy with networking support and the create a partition and copy down the setup to a local partition. Frankly, unless you are confident with networking and permissions I would go the route of buying a 2.5 to 3.5 IDE cable for a couple of quid.

If you need power as well, this is an example 2.5 to 3.5 IDE apater. You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

An alternative is to take the disk out and put it an external caddy, repartition it and place the Windows install files in a FAT partition and then put it back, boot into DOS and run setup - you can then install Windows to the other partition.

ew questions !

so as i understand from u
i get these cables and i connect the hardisk via them to my desktop pc
then i set up partitions and copy window files then stick the hard disk back in the laptop and install window via bootable floppy??
is that what u meant

anyways can't i install window directly on hd on my desktop and when instalation ends i just plug the hard disk in to the laptop

final questions
if i buy this cable i just plug it in my desktop to the hd
is there any other cables needed or what
Please if other stuff needed please tell me all the stuff i need to order them to so that i will be able to do what u told me to do

Thank you

[[anyways can't i install window directly on hd on my desktop and when instalation ends i just plug the hard disk in to the laptop

1. Connect the laptop disk to your other PC
2. Partition the disk into 1x1G and 1x<rest of the disk>
3. Format the 1G to FAT file system
4. Insert the Windows CD and copy all the contents onto the 1G partition on the laptop disk.
5. Connect the laptop disk back to the laptop
6. Boot into DOS on a floppy on the laptop
7. change directory to the harddisk and run setup.exe
8. Install Windows to the large ( not the 1G ) paritition.
9. Relax and have a coffee as it loads.
10. Remove floppy and reboot when told to.

No because:

- The HAL ( hardware abstration layer) will have loaded all the wrong drivers ( i.e. the ones for your PC not your laptop ) and the chance of windows failiing on startup is very, very, very, very high.

- The WGA ( Windoze Genuine Advantage ) will force you to relicense your software since your network NIC, RAM and CPU have changed ( not sure you would get this far though ).
[[[does it have to be fat cant i make it ntfs in step 3
[3. Format the 1G to FAT file system]]]

NO NO NO
Do not format it to NTFS since your DOS boot disk will probably not be able to read it (trying to keep it simple without NTFS4DOS utilities etc.).
