'compact', 'custom' or 'typical'

While installing any software, what is 'typical', 'custom' or 'compact' options?

When installing software programs, quite often these three options are given for the user to choose. (typical, custom or compact). Most of them just choose any options without knowing the difference between these options.

The harddisk capacity in olden days was very limited. Therefore when installing applications in the old computers this 'compact' option can be chosen to save on disk space. If application is installed using this option then some of the features of the application may be removed and a smaller version of the application will be installed. However now the computer harddisk has more capacity and therefore this option need to be used.

If you choose 'typical', then the installation time will be shorter. There is no need to think too much. But in this method also the complete features will not be installed. A most common set of features of the application as decided by the application vendor will be installed.

The 'custom' option if chosen will display a popup screen prompting the user to decide what are the features the user wants to install in his computer. Some of the features in the list shown will be already selected. Mostly all the 'typical' features will be selected by default. if you feel that some of the already selected features are not reuired then just deselect them and select other features if you want. For instance that application may have multi language support for languages like french, german etc. If you don't need them you can de select those features. So the 'custom' feature is the most useful option. You find it difficult the first time. Once you get used to it, installing your next application will be a breeze.
