Without knowing the real reason a person snores, it is very difficult to determine an effective treatment.

The narrower the airway the more a person snores and the louder the snoring is.
Snoring is caused by a variety of conditions and circumstances. Nasal congestion, for example, can cause the airway to narrow and result in snoring. This is why a person who does not ordinarily snore may become a snorer when they have a cold.
If you have a deviated septum, this can result in snoring as well. Alcohol consumed especially near bedtime causes the throat muscles to relax and can make a person snore.
Sleep apnea is a serious condition that can have a very negative effect on a person's health and wellbeing. It also results in snoring. The airway is actually completely blocked causing the individual to stop breathing altogether for a time.
People suffering from sleep apnea tend to snore very loudly and it is often followed by a few moments of complete silence as they stop breathing. A snort or gasp wakes them up as the attempt to get air. This can happen multiple times throughout the night and the person wakes up exhausted the next day.
If a person stops snoring when they change positions it is usually considered a mild case of snoring. It is often worse when the person is sleeping on their back. Snoring that it is severe does not stop with a change of position and continues throughout the night.
