How can I find what speed my modem is connecting at?

In Windows 98 your Dial-Up Connection should tell you what speed you are connected at. When you connect, a little icon appears in the System Tray. It looks like two tiny monitors with flashing green (or red) screens. Double-click this icon to see your connect speed. (If you cannot find this, try double clicking the Shortcut icon on your Desktop or under Dial-Up Networking).

It will show Connected at: followed by a number. If you suspect that your connect speed is lower than what it should be, or that your connections are unstable, do a series of connects and disconnects. Record the connect speed each time to see if it varies.
