The winter months in rural Canada can be brutally cold, especially in the northern regions of the country. In subzero temperatures water can freeze quickly wreaking havoc on any outdoor equipment vulnerable to freezing. In order for fire fighters and emergency service workers to do their job effectively, it is imperative that tanker tanks and other firefighting equipment work at all times. Unfortunately, the discharge value on tankers and pumper trucks with front mount pumps are particularly vulnerable to freezing in cold temperatures, and in rural areas, a portable pump can freeze in the time it takes to carry it to the lake or river, rendering it useless.  In an emergency, equipment failure due to freezing is unacceptable, but in many rural areas it can be a common occurrence. Chief Blair Arthur of the Municipality of Shuniah Fire Department, near Thunder Bay, Ontario wanted to find an effective solution to keep his fire department's pumper tanks and portable pumps working in extreme cold temperatures.
In December of 2007 Chief Arthur  put in a call to Heat-Line® (You are not allowed to view links. At the time he called, he had no idea how quickly the company's product designers would get to work to develop a custom solution to meet his request. After discussing the problem with Heat-Line® staff, it only took a few days before two custom Kompensator® freeze protection systems, dubbed the "Arthur Heater", were built and delivered to the Shuniah Fire Department. According to Chief Arthur,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, the Kompensator system has been working flawlessly and continuously ever since going into service. It is an "awesome product,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login," states Chief Arthur. "We have equipped two tankers now. We leave the freeze protection system on all the time and never think or worry about it. It has never let us down. As rural fire fighters, we could never reliably operate without it. It's peace of mind knowing that our only weak link on the tankers are covered by Heat-Line and it always works. Problem solved," says Chief Arthur.
Lorne Heise, president & CEO of Heat-Line, knew as soon as Chief Arthur explained his problem that his company would come up with a solution. "We are always looking for ways to utilize our conductive-polymer heating cable technology in other freeze protection applications," states Heise. "The Arthur Heater Kompensator, named after Fire Chief Arthur who inspired it, is specifically made for the fire fighting industry. This is a low voltage, high performance freeze protection system for trucks or portable pumps that uses conductive polymer core technology, allowing valves to be completely heated and insulated. Kompensator applies the required energy from the vehicle's electrical system, minimizing loads while providing incredible reliability. We are pleased to be able to provide a product that effectively protects valuable firefighting equipment from freezing temperatures,You are not allowed to view links.
