Honorary geographical appointment for map expert
An Ordnance Survey expert in geoinformation has been appointed honorary
secretary of the Association of Geographic Information (AGI).

mapping agency will fill this important position for AGI which represents
the interests of the geographic information industry.
Based in Edinburgh, Dr Buchanan is part of Ordnance Survey's Public
Affairs team.He develops policy relationships with parliamentarians, central
government and other key figures in Scotland's public sector.
"The AGI has a key role in the geographic information industry in the
UK, and I welcome the opportunity to help it achieve its mission through

Since his appointment at Ordnance Survey he has played a key role in
communicating the benefits of GI to all stakeholders and has worked with
AGI and other industry groups in wider ventures promoting GI use.
The new honorary role comes after four years of serving on the AGI Council.
He has a wealth of academic and practical experience with a postgraduate
diploma in surveying from Glasgow University and a doctorate from Newcastle
University.He worked in the surveying department of Newcastle University

He also helped to develop the successful EDINA Digimap service based
at the University of Edinburgh.This gives university staff and students
across Britain online access to Ordnance Survey digital mapping for both
teaching and research purposes.
