Probably one of the most realistic camera cars ever
The 1971 race car epic “LeMans” is an iconic film that every car enthusiast should see (we suggest a surround-sound set-up). It stars Steve McQueen and includes footage shot at the 1970 LeMans race and film shot live in real time, with real race cars, really going 150 mph…no GC funny business here. The movie runs about 35 minutes before any dialog, which is fine with us, uninterrupted V12s screaming at redline need no words. One of the filming platforms was a specially modified Ford GT40. Probably the most realistic camera car ever, the competition-specification 1968 Ford GT40 Gulf/Mirage Lightweight Racing Car, chassis P/1074 was the first, by serial number, of several lightweight GT40s built for the J.W.A. Gulf team. Adorned in the Gulf team colors of Powder Blue with a Marigold stripe, the Ford raced extensively throughout 1968 from Daytona to Le Mans, as well as the Le Mans trials at the hands of Jacky Ickx. It was sold to Solar Productions in 1970 and converted for filming by removing the roof, among other minor mods. It has seen many owners since then and has been restored to its racing heyday and recently offered up for sale. The rarity as a lightweight, distinguished racing pedigree and Hollywood career converged to make it a star at the recent RM Auction in Monterey, California where it set a record for an American-made car with an astounding $11 Million hammer price.
a
Photo Gallery: GT40 Sets World Record on RM Auction Pedestal - Super Street Magazine

GT40 Sets World Record on RM Auction Pedestal - Intel |
