Answer
How to get stereo mix back in windows vista
Quote
    * Right-click on the speaker icon on the system tray
    * choose Recording Devices
    * Make sure that the Recording tab is selected
    * right click on the empty area in the dialog box and
      select Show Disabled Devices & The Stereo Mix device will be selected.
    * Right click on the Stereo Mix device and select Enable.
    * Apply and click ok
You may have to reboot, but you will now have your
precious Stereo Mix back.
To record Windows is a promoter for paid stuff they like to use wma and such formates so  they dont allow you to record wave as before or mp3. My advise is to install a recording program i use JetAudio instead of windows recorder
This will not give you what XP gave you before
Honestly i hate Windows now i am hating Vista day after day like when xp first got  released
Now am planning to install Xp or Linux in addition to Vista

As am new to vista that is all what i got to say i am still not satisfied i will discover more and share them soon
For any more questions please do ask them here

Hey Ryan! I tried this procedure and it doesn't work with my laptop. When I click show disabled or disconnected devices, it doesn't do anything. :(

Ryan

There are some stuff you need to check
From what i see that your computer havnt found yet the stereo mix device make sure drivers are installed properly so that a new stereo mix icon appears
When it does
Right click on the Stereo Mix device and select Enable.

another thing open your devices properties
>> go to levels tab  and increase the volume and boost ( to max to test it the decrease a bit to get best sound)
Also you may need to go to advance tab and check the 2 checkbox to give your recording program control over the device

make sure that the recording software( like jetaudio for example) you selected the correct recording input (microphone stereo .... )

Please if you got further questions dont hesitate to ask

I uninstalled the drivers, reinstalled, and updated them and still the stereo mix won't show up. :(

I use fruity loops for audio recordings and projects and it only shows the built in mic on my laptop. Whenever I plug in a microphone to the microphone jack in the front, it records the built in mic and the microphone. There is no separate mic control. :(

Ahhh vista confuses me!

Ryan

actually these settings is all what i need to get normally the stereo recording thing
but your case is like mine case once i first used vista
actually :S i forgot how i fixed it
honestly i dont know   :-[ :-[
