Copernic - Part 2

Are you ready for Part 2? Here we go!

Yesterday, in Part 1 of this article series, we set up Copernic to index the files you wanted it to search and we left things at the point shown below:



Now, let’s move on a bit and see what other changes we can make!

When you first use Copernic, you will have icons in two places, like this:



Now, if you will be searching for all of these types of files, you can leave it as it is. But, if you're like me, you'll probably want to restrict the number of file types you search for (and therefore, index). So, what now?

Well, let’s start by going to Tools, Options.



You will then see this window:



Next, select the second option of Display.



You can then uncheck the file types (and the icons) you don’t want to include on the main display.

In my case, I only wanted e-mails and document files, so my Copernic looks like this:



Searching with Copernic

Before you can use Copernic for the first time, you need to let it do its work of indexing all the file types you have selected. Depending on the volume you have chosen, that could take several hours. But, it will work in the background of your computer and you can always do other things while it's going.

So, now, let’s put Copernic through its paces with a real search.

Let’s start by finding a file with a specific word in it, like this:



In this example, I am searching for a Word document with the word "Invoice" in it. To do so, select the File icon at the top and then type your desired word in the Search box. Then in a very short time period, it will tell you how many files it has found and where you may be able to locate them (see above).

But Copernic even goes one step further. If you single click the file you are interested in, it will give you a Preview Pane below the main window where you can see what the file actually contains (again, certain private information has been blocked out in the screenshot below):



So, what about e-mails?



Well, first, select the E-mail icon. Then enter a relevant word in the Search box. Also, if you suspect that the word may be found in an e-mail attachment, you should also checkmark the option of "Also search in attachments" (2).

Again, in a very short space of time, the results will come sorted by date and a preview (1) can be seen below.

But again, you can go one step further! Next, look at the circled icons in the preview pane (3). Right from within Copernic, you can Open, Print, Reply and Forward this message (using your e-mail client) and also Find relevant messages. It's very useful indeed!

So, you can see what a useful tool Copernic actually is!

No more lost letters, MP3s or e-mails. You can now track them all down with Copernic!

Addendum

For those of you who may be interested in a little more information about customizing Copernic, there are a few more options described below.

If, for instance, you want to change the frequency with which Copernic indexes new files, go to Tools, Options and then select the Indexing and Performance button. You can see a number of options here:



Or, maybe you want to extend the scope of files searched for and indexed. In that case, click on the Advanced button and then hit Add. That will give you this choice:



There are a lot of other options too and if you feel adventurous, give them a try. Hope you enjoy Copernic as much as I already do!
