Whenever I’m at large events filled with all of these people trying to hand out their business cards to everyone in sight, I’m not always given the chance to talk to as many people as I would like to. I find myself getting handed business card after business card without uttering much of anything to the person who handed it to me.
After these events are over I have to sit down and sort through everything I was given. This means taking all of those business cards and seeing which ones I feel like keeping and which ones will get tossed in the trash.
There are two different problems I’ve come across when it comes to these cards, and the first one is a complete lack of any information on what it is the person or company does.
They have their name and company name on the card,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, but they give no kind of description of this company or what types of services it fulfills. A company name alone is rarely if ever enough to give me any information,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, nor is the company logo if the card has ones. There are plenty of companies out there with interesting,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, if ambiguous names. I can’t decipher what their services might be from these names.
The second thing is the people who do list a job title,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, but the title is so vague or hard to follow I still don’t know what it is that they do. Combing an odd company name with the generic title of Sales Associate doesn’t help me out very much, especially if I don’t know what they’re even selling.
If you’re going to get  business card printing you need to be sure that your business card can stand on its own. Cards like these require me to talk to something first or I won’t know anything about the company. Sure, I could look up the company name on my own if I really wanted to. I could find out by spending my own time on it,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, but why should I? If you’re paying for business card printing I would hope you’d bother to get your money’s worth by making a good card.
If your company name is completely obvious, or if your specific position is important, than take the time to list what it is that you or your company does. Maybe add a description on the back of the card going over the basics. It should only take you a sentence or two to give people an overview and make sure they don’t have to search for themselves to get answers.
Before you make your next business card stop to ask yourself how self contained your card is. If everything isn’t obvious to someone who doesn’t know a thing about your company, than I would go back to the drawing board.
