Can we dare to dream of a color-blind world? You could argue the naivety of such a romantic and currently unrealistic goal but let us take a few seconds to honestly, I mean honestly, explore it. This presidential election could be a referendum on this very quest for many of us.
The reality is,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, that from our birth, we are taught, whether it is consciously or unconsciously, to categorize and label things. Let us be clear this concept is taught and is not inherently natural. It is our way of understanding the environment around us and is necessary for teaching, learning and adapting to situation our entire life. Defining things,You are not allowed to view links. It is also an unfortunate reality that this learned process,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, like anything else, can and does get out of control. Categorizing and labeling humans, for example, from certain groups,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, ethnic backgrounds or geographic locations can be very inaccurate and sometimes downright dangerous! This is most evident in this year’s 2008 Presidential Campaign.
The United States of America will pick a new president this year. For the first time in this country’s history there is an African-American with a legitimate shot at running the highest office in the land. While we cannot ignore this unprecedented moment in time, we can only pray that the candidate will win or lose based on qualifications and leadership potential. When casting our vote this year, try to imagine for a moment that it is impossible to see the either candidates’ skin color or texture of their hair. You could only hear the words from their hearts and minds. You could only read of their life story, their diligent work record and their contributions to American society. Just imagine if we could take race out of the equation. If this was possible and we dared to dream, in theory, we would be forced to pick the best candidate for the job based on sound, objective reasoning. Isn’t that what we need to do?
The problem comes back to our conditioned need to categorize and label everything and everyone. If everything is not in some neat,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, little mental box in our minds, our brains go haywire. It is our psychological security blanket. This person is Black, White, Spanish, Asian, Indian so that means he/she is… The fact that human beings can choose and not be bound by primal or inherited instincts is what makes us the superior species. Our ability to change, to adapt, to evolve drives us to perfection. Our next leader must embody that drive. We should judge them by their desire to make us a more perfect union. We should select them based on their desire to bring us forward as one race, the American race, the human race.  Martin Luther King Jr. once said “I have a dream that one day a person will not be judged by the color of their skin but the contents of their character.” What a novel idea. Imagine a world where humans do not walk around with labels attached to them. The day that we can achieve this is a day where we will be that much closer to perfection.
