Before the 1970s community colleges were more frequently known as junior colleges, a term that continues to be used at some institutions throughout the U.S. However, while the term "junior college" has been used to express private two-year institutions, the term "community college" has often been used to describe publicly funded two-year institutions.
A community college is a two-year post-secondary (beyond high school) institution, which is usually situated in regions where four-year institutions are absent for purposes of availability to the community. Community colleges are funded by public taxes and are frequently called “the people’s colleges” thanks to a seemingly open-door policy (admission is usually automatic for anyone who has attained a high school diploma or its equivalent). Perhaps the most useful quality of attending a community college is that for millions of Americans, higher education becomes an option that might not otherwise be present.
Community colleges are traditionally open to students of all ages, all races, and all economic backgrounds people. Nowadays, a large number of students can complete the general education requirement for a university at a community college to skip this requirement at a pricier four-year institutions. Moreover community colleges create an opportunity for job training programs for a number of occupations. For example, nursing, culinary arts, graphic design and fashion design can be learned at a community college. These types of programs are offered to students with hands-on training, helping them function in his or her career. Most community colleges present academic program degrees such as an Associate of Arts (AA) degree or an Associate of Science (AS) degree.
In the United States, a junior college refers to a private institute of a two-year post-secondary school that’s intended to provide academic, vocational and professional education. The highest certificate that a junior college offered is generally an associate's degree. A junior college student can transfer some or all of the credits earned at a junior college to the degree requirements of the 4-year school. Junior Colleges generally offer generally arts, science and literature.
