The family of Winnie Brady, who died while on a pilgrimage to Bosnia-Herzegovina last year, were today arranging to have her body returned to Ireland.
The 59-year-old mother-of-five from Raheny, Dublin,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, who disappeared while on a trip to Medjugorje last September, was formally identified yesterday.
At the weekend, a hunter found her body on a remote hillside 3km from a hotel she had been staying at.
A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said Bosnian authorities would release details of the post mortem later, but foul play has been ruled out.
Officials from the Embassy in Lublyana, Slovenia were also assisting the family and would help with the return of Mrs Brady’s remains if asked.
Mrs Brady’s devastated husband Stephen flew to Bosnia on Monday to formally identify the body.
Photos of her jewellery taken by Bosnian Police were earlier identified by Mr Brady.
Mrs Brady, who suffered from arthritis, had been due to go to Mass in the mountains near Medjugorje on September 6 but remained in the guesthouse because she had a sore leg.
She was last seen telling the owner that she was going for a stroll.
It is understood Mrs Brady got lost in the rocky and mountainous terrain surrounding the shrine and may have slipped and fallen. Friends later returned to the guesthouse and found her passport, money luggage and medication all left in her room but no sign of Mrs Brady.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern has stressed the Government was doing all in its power to assist the family.
“We have given full assistance to Mr Brady. He has been very complimentary, it’s fair to say, of the department,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login,” the minister said.
“I have to take my hat off to the Defence Forces who were out there. Our own Defence Forces liaised with local people in the searches, the very extensive searches.
“Obviously we have facilitated Mr Brady going to identify the body,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, if it is his wife and we have all the back up. We have sent people to the location today to meet him and look after him.”
