Almost 100 workers at a French-owned car components factory were told today they are to lose their jobs as the plant closes.
Calcast - which makes cylinder heads for the Ford Explorer 4x4 - blamed the shutdown of the plant at Campsie in Co Derry on the global financial crisis .
Management told workers: "The company will be closing down as a result of current market difficulties."
Calcast is a subsidiary of Montupet, a major supplier to Ford.
Workers at Calcast had feared the worst after being laid off for the past two weeks, but were ready to resume production today.
They were given the bad news at a meeting between management and unions at which it was revealed up to 10 of the 103 workers would be offered jobs elsewhere in Montupet which has another plant at Dunmurry outside Belfast.
A consultation period over the loss of around 90 jobs was started.
However,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, a row blew up over the decision to offer jobs to the handful of workers.
A workers' representative, Liam Helferty, claimed it meant those losing their jobs would get a reduced pay off.
"If there are 99 people or less you're entitled to one month's notice, but if there are 99 or more you're entitled to three months' notice.
"The company are basically playing a numbers game here in order to save themselves two months' notice money, and it's a disgrace," he said.
Workers had been told they could go home immediately, he said,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, but they were staying put.
"We're not going home to make it easy for the company, they need to treat us properly,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login," he added.
There was no immediate comment from the company.
SDLP leader Mark Durkan said it was a difficult time for the workforce.
"People face huge uncertainties in their lives, and coming up to Christmas and as we face a very serious recession,You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, it's a terrible time for so many families and the local economy."
