In a speech before the United Nations General Assembly today, President Bush called on the nations of the world to unite against terrorism. Speaking at the opening of the 62nd session of the General Assembly, the President called terrorists a threat against all civilized people.

He stated that all of the civilized nations must work together in order to stop the terrorists by the means of sharing their intelligence that the nations have gathered about the terrorist's networks and stopping their sources of financing as well as bringing their operatives to justice. He also stated that the best way to defeat the terrorists in the long run is to defeat their ideology by providing a more hopeful vision of liberty.

The President went on to say that the United Nations must encourage the leaders in attempting to build free institutions that fight terror and enforce the law as well as to respond to all of the needs of their citizens.

Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Afghanistan and Iraq have chosen democracy, and still the terrorists are trying to overthrow the votes of their citizens. He calls it an evidence of fear, and not a show if strength.

In particular, he spoke against the dictators who are in power in Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Iran. He called them nations that are denying their people even the most fundamental of rights. He referred to the rights granted by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document is 60 years old and the President called it a landmark achievement in the history of human liberty.

He also spoke against the military junta in Myanmar, which is the former country of Burma and he stated that he will be announcing a series of steps that are designed to bring a change, a peaceful change to this nation.

He also spoke about the possibility of the death of Fidel Castro. He said that the UN must be ready to assist Cuba in the post Castro era. He also mentioned that the UN has the responsibility to work to achieve a change in Zimbabwe and in Darfur in the Sudan.

He ended by saying that the nations of the world may have their differences, but even so they can still agree on many things .
