How to Install an External Modem on a System
Installing an external modem is easy and takes little time than internal modem. You don't have to open the computer or install modem cards. Given steps applies to all computer system.
 

Open the modem box and its accessories. You should have the modem, cable, phone cord, power adapter, installation CD, and instruction manual.
Shut down the computer and any attached devices.
Attach one end of the modem cable to the serial port (wide, 25-pin connector) or USB port on the computer and the other end to the modem.
Connect one end of the phone cord to the modem port marked "phone" or "line" and the other end to your phone line.
Attach the power adapter plug to the modem and the power transformer plug to the power outlet, if this is required for your modem.
Turn on the computer and the modem, if it has an on/off switch.
When your computer starts up, Insert the installation diskette or CD (if you do not receive prompts for installing the modem), click the drive, and click (or double-click) the installation program on the diskette or CD.
You can verify that your modem is working properly by using the diagnostics that are available through the Phone and Modem Options icon in Control Panel. On the Modems tab, click the modem that you want to test. Click Properties, then click Diagnostics, then click Query Modem.
