The IMAX Documentaries

SUMMARY
Although IMAX is an impressive format from a technical perspective, its popularity as a motion picture format has traditionally been limited. The expense and logistics of producing and presenting IMAX films has dictated a shorter running time compared to conventional movies for most presentations (typically around 40 minutes). The majority of films in this format tend to be documentaries ideally suited for institutional venues such as museums and science centers. IMAX cameras have been taken into space aboard the Space Shuttle, to Mount Everest, to the bottom of the Atlantic ocean, and to the Antarctic to film such documentaries. Although IMAX documentaries have been praised for their technical quality, critics have also complained that many have banal narration.

Michael Jordan To The Max
A cinematic homage to one of the greatest NBA basketball players ever, MICHAEL JORDAN TO THE MAX is a loving documentary that focuses on the last season the world-class Chicago Bulls player took part in before hanging up his sneakers. Directors James Stern and Don Kempf originally presented this concise celebration in IMAX format, but watching Jordan's signature jumps and plays is just as compelling on video and DVD. Jordan himself is famous not just for being a great player, but for his admirable work ethic and, in this day of utterly shameless behavior among professional athletes, is a man who takes his position as role model to the young very seriously. Narrated by Laurence Fishburne, the film explores Jordan's various moments of athletic genius, showing highlights of several tense games in which Jordan saved his team from defeat. The film also uses footage of Jordan's appearances in TV commercials, and in various interviews, which illustrate his unique personal dedication to sports, and to kids. This is not an in-depth biography, but rather an entertaining and highly inspirational portrait of a great athlete.

Bugs 2D: A Rainforest Adventure
Shot on-location in the jungles of Borneo, the film follows the life cycles of the caterpillar known as Papilio and the praying mantis known as Hierodula. As a caterpillar, Papilio dines on leaves, builds a cocoon, and becomes a butterfly before searching for a mate and laying eggs. As a butterfly, she survives by drinking the nectar from flowers. Meanwhile Hierodula catches flies for dinner, sheds his outer layer, and mates with a female mantis twice his size. Also includes large-format footage of other creatures, such as beetles, scorpions, tarantulas, frogs, and bats.

Adrenaline Rush: The Science of Risk
"Adrenaline Rush" explores the innards of risk taking in a wide and spectacular way. From the "explosive" science and entrepreneurship of Alfred Nobel to a schoolboy's first day in class, from the boldness and determination of Henry Ford to the shy but affectionate sentiment of a teen for another, "Adrenaline Rush" brings us on a journey in the multidimensional world of risk, a world where progress of humankind or personal accomplishment aren't necessarily related to the scope or the nature of the endeavor. "Adrenaline Rush" also teaches us that humanity can benefit from the unexpected and combined efforts of two very different risk takers whose minds meet across half a millennium and across the boundaries of the Old and New Worlds, as we witness the experiment of Leonardo Da Vinci's notorious parachute by Adrian Nicholas, world's most respected skydiver and inventor in his own right, monitored closely by Salford scientists who seek answers on critical and life pertaining matters. Incidentally, "Adrenaline Rush" doesn't hesitate to explain scientific concepts in simple words. From the soaring and breathtaking cliffs of Norway to the calm and inspiring immensity of the Mojave Desert, from Thomas Edison's laboratory to a simple American schoolyard, "Adrenaline Rush" is more than a thrilling visual experience, it's an invitation to explore our inner selves and a statement that there is no such thing as having little courage.

Mystery of the Nile
On Christmas day of 2003, Pasquale Scaturro and a team of explorers set out on an epic quest to become the first to complete a full descent of the world's greatest river, the Blue Nile and the Nile, from source to sea. Four months later, on April 28 at 7:01am, Pasquale and his expedition partner Gordon Brown, reached the mouth of the Nile at the Mediterranean Sea, becoming the first in history to complete this 3,250-mile journey. Their amazing journey is the basis for the IMAX film, MYSTERY OF THE NILE.

Greatest Places
The Greatest Places begins by noting that Earth is "the most diverse planet in the solar system," and impressive computer-generated graphics depict the very early history of the planet, showing vividly how geological events formed the continents. Particular sites around the world (the "greatest places" of the title) are then visited, and some dazzling cinematography displays the exotic locations spectacularly. A trip into the jungles of Madagascar demonstrates how the island, isolated as it was for 40 million years, developed unique wildlife, including many species of lemurs. High atop the Tibetan plateau, nomads are seen herding yaks and Buddhist pilgrims are filmed against the stunning peaks of the Himalayas. A "holy lake" in Tibet dissolves into a shot of the mighty Amazon River, and the ecosystem of the South American jungle is explored. And the world's largest island, Greenland, is scanned by cameras that linger on the sheer enormity of glaciers as well as on the native peoples who manage to live at extreme low temperatures. Near the end of the film the narrator notes that "life is a reflection of the landscape." And the breathtaking film shot in these remote but magnificent locales does demonstrate beautifully the awesome diversity of both landscape and life on Earth.

The Discoverers
The Discoverers features some astoundingly spectacular footage all centering around the act of discovery. The story of the great navigator Magellan's search for a passage to the Pacific is presented with film of spectacular sunsets and scenery, and a visit to a re-creation of Sir Isaac Newton's laboratory while he refracts light with lamps and prisms is equally beautiful. The various vignettes, which range from a child and her father discovering paintings of bison painted on cave ceilings thousands of years ago to a scientist on a team analyzing data sent back from a probe sent to the planet Venus, don't proceed in a linear path. But that's the whole idea. The production was inspired by the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Discoverers by Daniel J. Boorstin, and the goal was to put the viewer alongside those who explore the unknown as they experience the joyous moments of discovery. There is some serious science presented in the course of the film, but fear not, it's all presented in a highly entertaining manner. All that's required is to simply sit back and immerse yourself in the utterly gorgeous cinematography.
